Selling Cotton: Staple Length, Moisture and Getting a Fair Rate

Stacked jute sacks and a weighing scale at an Indian agricultural mandi

Cotton is priced on staple length, trash content and moisture, not on weight alone. Buyers are ginners and mills who care about what the lint will spin into. The Cotton Corporation of India buys at MSP when market rates fall below it, which gives a floor in weak years. Clean, dry, well-picked cotton consistently earns above the average rate.

Staple length sets the ceiling

Longer staple spins into finer yarn and commands a higher price. The variety largely determines this, but picking practice affects the consistency of what reaches the buyer. Mixed lots of different staples get priced at the lower one, which is why keeping varieties separate matters at sale time.

Trash content is the most common deduction

Leaf, stalk and soil in the pick all have to be removed by the ginner, and they discount for it. Careful picking and clean handling on the farm is directly worth money. Cotton picked onto clean sheets and stored off the ground reaches the buyer in better shape than cotton handled loosely.

Moisture is a hidden cost

Damp cotton weighs more, which looks good at first, but buyers test for it and adjust. Worse, moisture causes staining and quality loss in storage, which cuts the rate further. Drying properly protects both the weight paid for and the grade.

CCI as a floor in weak years

When market rates fall below the announced minimum support price, the Cotton Corporation of India procures at MSP through its centres. This is a genuine floor and worth knowing about before accepting a low private offer. Procurement rules and centre locations vary by season.

Frequently asked questions

When does CCI buy cotton?
When market rates fall below the announced MSP. Centre locations and operating dates change by season, so check locally.
Why did my rate drop despite good weight?
Usually trash or moisture. Both add weight but reduce what the buyer can use, so they discount for both.
