Maize has more buyer types than most crops. Poultry feed makers, starch mills, ethanol units and the open mandi all buy it, and they value different things. Feed buyers care most about moisture and mould, starch mills about starch content and cleanliness. Knowing which buyer is active near you usually matters more than the headline mandi rate.

Who actually buys maize
The mandi is only the visible part of the market. Behind it sit poultry feed manufacturers, starch and glucose units, and increasingly ethanol producers. Each has different volume needs and different quality tolerances, and each is willing to pay differently. A seller who only checks the mandi rate is seeing one price out of several.
Moisture and mould decide the rate
Feed buyers reject or discount heavily for mould, because contaminated feed damages their own customers' birds. Moisture above specification is the usual cause. Drying properly before sale is not optional in this market, it is the difference between a full rate and a rejected load.
Volume changes your position
Industrial buyers want predictable quantities on a schedule. A single small load has little bargaining power, but a group of farmers offering a consistent tonnage every fortnight is a supplier worth negotiating with. Aggregating with neighbours is often the fastest way to move up the price ladder.
Rabi and kharif markets behave differently
Kharif maize arrives in bulk and competes with itself, so rates soften at peak arrival. Rabi maize enters a thinner market and often finds firmer demand. If you have the option of either season, that difference is worth planning around.
